1) Description Yellowish-White to Yellowish grey voluminous powder, odour faint and characteristic of cresol.
2) Solubility Practically insoluble in water, soluble in 250 parts of ethanol (96%), in 130 parts of ether and 50 parts of chloroform.
3) Identification
A) Burn 20 mg by the method for oxygen-flask combustion, using 5 ml of 2M sodium hydroxide as the absorbing liquid, and dilute to 25 ml with water. To 5 ml add 1 ml silver nitrate solution; a brown precipitate is produced. Add 5 ml of 5M ammonia, shake, filter and acidify the filtrate with nitric acid; a white precipitate is produced.
B) To a suspension of 5 mg in 5 ml of water, add dropwise 5 % w/v solution of iron (III) chloride shaking after each addition; a pale bluishgreen colour is produced.
4) Acidity pH 3.0 to 5.0 (aqueous extract of 0.5 % chloroform solution).
5) Clarity 0.1 g in 100 ml chloroform should be clear.
6) Iron NMT 80 ppm
7) Chloride NMT 350 ppm
8) Sulfate NMT 300 ppm
9) Loss on drying NMT 0.5%
10) Sulphated ash NMT 0.2%
11) Assay(GC) 95 to 105
